Four portraits: mother, grandmother, Heikki and father
HD-video / 8 min 2 sec / 16:9 / stereo/ 2014

My family is small and I have only four relatives. I want to look at every one of them closely, because I can’t stand the idea of not remembering how they look. I have wanted to film them in a way that emphasizes everyone’s individual way of existing, the difficulty of  staying still and sinking complitely into it. The work Four portraits: mother, grandmother, Heikki and father is a tableau of one family and it’s identity.

Home Sweet Home
2015
Installation; cross-stitch patterns

The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 1: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

It’s worthwhile to be born in Finland by many measures. But not all Finns are born in Finland. When does an immigrant earn the right to call Finland their home?

My work addresses opposition to immigration with a hint of sarcasm. When I started sketching last winter I had no idea how relevant the topic would be this summer.

So called Immigration critics defend their radical views with empty phrases and euphemisms. I aim to point out the tackiness of their statements. “When in Rome” sounds more like a demand than a request coming from an immigration critic.

I have created cross-stitch patterns of quotes from immigration critics. Traditional cross-stitch wall hangings define a home and it’s values with beautiful decorative phrases. Immigration critics call for immigrants to adapt to the manners and ways of the country. But can these critics define the values for the whole country to live by?

Three reflections of self
HD-video / 15 min 27 s / 16:9 / stereo / 2014

In Three reflections of self I discuss subjectivity and the experience of another person through an interview arrangement.

I asked three people close to me to interview me on a subject of their choice. In my work three different images of me are formed for the viewer. Each of these images is brought out by the interviewer and the specific circumstance. My interviewers give me qualities, an identity.

My Mental Image of Tesoma
Animation

Suburban area’s reputation is often linked to the long lasting mental images associated with it, and the residents are not the only ones building that reputation. Outsiders’ mental images also have a significant role in building the reputation of an area. My Mental Image of Tesoma is the animated version of my first mental image of Tesoma, a suburb in Tampere, as it was during the 70’s and 80’s.

Mental image can be defined as mental representation of the thing, place or a person that’s based on memory rather than those things being actually present to the person’s senses.

For the animation I collected stories from people who live and have lived in Tesoma – what was it like to grow up in a suburb and how Finland learned the ways of suburban society. The stories tell of policemen, sitting in staircases, drunkards, the sausage factory’s carcass pit and numerous fights. I grew up long after all this, during 90s and 2000s on the other side of the city.

My mental image of Tesoma’s early days can’t match the story tellers’ own experience, instead it’s an idea filtered through my other mental images, my prejudice and my experiences. Still, in my mind it’s stronger than any of the information I’ve read or the actual stories I heard. I am too far away in time and space.

The viewer is given an outsider’s point of view to another outsider’s mental image. I give them my flawed knowledge and they form yet another mental image of the place known as Tesoma.

IRL: 6pm @ Tesoma Kunsthalle, Ristimäenkatu 2, 33310 Tampere, Finland

Awakening is now possible for everyone. Awakening is a leap towards Enlightenment. Awakening means that one is living a normal life, in this moment, and no longer suffers, because the mind quiets down. The Awakened is free from stress and fears. Life is filled with peace and joy.

Riina Palmqvist (b. 1985) and Maria West (b. 1987) are two visual artists based in Turku, Finland.
